“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12
If you’ve ever talked to a veteran of the Viet Nam conflict, one of the issues you may have heard was that we couldn’t tell who the enemy was. Unlike past wars, they didn’t wear uniforms. To know who was friendly and who wasn’t was almost impossible.
We have a similar problem as Christians, except we can’t see our enemy in many cases. Oh, they manifest themselves in the problems we see, but spiritual forces don’t stand in front of us, swords drawn. We have a hard time, as humans, understanding the spiritual world. We are used to the physical, being able to touch, taste, smell, and hear. Without the physical aspects, we struggle to figure out what we are supposed to do. We want to be the ones doing the action. However, when we look at our battle armor, this should give us a hint of how we will be fighting.
Satan is at work in the world every day, and all we need to do is look at the news for the evidence. Abortion, disguised as women’s rights; persecution of believers’ faith portrayed as separation of church and state; divorce, well, just because it doesn’t feel right any more. The list goes on. We focus on the “me” and not on God and His will. When these succeed, Satan wins.
How do we combat this? Again, look at the armor you have. Read God’s word, pray, remain steadfast, and have faith that gives you the confidence to know that God will win. Know that you are not alone. Lean on other Christians through fellowship, study and prayer. This support is critical, so make sure you are worshiping with other believers each week.
Also know that God’s angels are battling for us. We can’t see this, but be assured that it is happening. Our prayers are support in these battles. Want more evidence that God sends His angels to help us? Read Daniel 10 to see the battle that went on to deliver a vision to Daniel. In verse 13, we see that sometimes Satan has the power to delay until reinforcements arrive. Don’t ever doubt that God will do what is necessary to see that His will is fulfilled. Learn from this and pray without ceasing!
